Invisalign Orthodontics as an Alternative to Conventional Braces
- Posted on: Oct 30 2018
Portland, OR area patients who are faced with dental concerns such as malocclusion may be told that braces are their only option. However, metal brackets and wires are the least attractive option available today. Instead, the team at NW Heights Dental, including Dr. Keri Smith , encourage patients to consider the benefits of alternative solutions such as Invisalign.
For patients who want a solution for misaligned teeth, braces might be the only option. This is now only true for patients with more severe diagnoses of malocclusion. However, many patients with mild to moderate malocclusion may benefit from alternative solutions such as Invisalign. Invisalign is a method of orthodontic treatment that eliminates the need for metal brackets and wires. Instead, patients will be able to achieve the same results with a more aesthetic option using invisible aligner trays. These trays are worn over the teeth at least 20 hours a day to realign the dental arch. Invisalign works on its own, providing gentle pushing of the teeth into a more desirable alignment.
The process of Invisalign
Invisalign begins with a consultation appointment during which patients speak with our professionals to learn about whether or not they are appropriate candidates. An evaluation is performed which may include x-rays to check the overall health of the smile. Conditions such as periodontal disease and cavities should be addressed before orthodontic treatment begins. When patients are ready to start, impressions are made via a digital device, and these impressions are sent off to the Invisalign laboratories where a series of trays is fabricated. Once complete, patients return back to the practice to obtain their trays and learn about how to use and care for them. Treatment begins and ends when the final tray in the series has been used.
