What Can I Do at Home to Prevent the Development of Cavities and Periodontal Disease?

Patients are constantly advised by their dentists to take care of their smile and avoid the development of serious problems. These problems often include periodontal disease and tooth decay. Both of these can impact the smile in a negative way, and can result in the loss of bone, soft tissues, and natural teeth. At NW Heights Dental, our dentists are dedicated to educating patients on how to prevent the develop of cavities and disease with proper home health care.

Below are a few things patients can do to maintain their oral health and avoid the development of common dental problems:

  • Brush after every meal. The American Dental Association, also known as the ADA, recommends that children and adults brush their teeth after every meal, and this includes snacks. Brushing can remove sugars and acids from the teeth and ensure they’re not present to develop into decay.
  • Floss at least once a day. Flossing keeps food particles from becoming stuck between teeth. While flossing after every meal is deal, once a day should be fine for overall dental health.
  • Consume healthy foods. Keeping the body healthy is often achieved with diet and exercise. When patients eat healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables and reduce their intake of sugary and acidic foods and beverages such as sodas and candies, they are helping keep their smile healthy and free from cavities. If any of these sweet treats are consumed, patients should brush and floss their teeth immediately after to avoid leaving sugars and acids on the tooth enamel.
  • Visit the dentist regularly. Patients are encouraged to visit their dentist every six months for a cleaning and evaluation. This is critical as it allows a dentist to spot problems early enough to effectively intervene. Additionally, patients should call their dentist as soon as they notice any issues such as sensitive teeth or tooth pain.
