Preparing the teeth for porcelain veneers
- Posted on: Mar 15 2020
Porcelain veneers are becoming a popular choice for many patients in the area of Portland, OR. Drs. Keri Smith and David Hiebert of NW Heights Dental of Portland welcome patients into the practice to learn more about whether or not they are a good candidate for veneers.
What is a porcelain veneer?
The term “veneer” is often associated with covering something to change its appearance. The same goes for teeth. A porcelain veneer is a ceramic facing that is custom-made for a patient. It is cemented onto the front of a tooth to change its appearance. This creates a more aesthetically-pleasing look to the smile when patients are struggling with the presence of permanently stained teeth, gapped teeth, or broken teeth. Porcelain veneers may also be used on teeth that may be unusual in shape or size or are misaligned within the smile.
Preparing the tooth for porcelain veneers
The decision to place a veneer should be a long-term, permanent consideration. This is because a portion of the natural tooth enamel needs to be removed to take impressions of the tooth. This thin portion of enamel ensures that the final product does not add unwanted bulk to the tooth. Impressions are created and sent to a dental laboratory for the fabrication of the final veneer, while the dentist will place a temporary veneer until this is completed. Once the veneer arrives back to the dental office, patients return to NW Heights Dental of Portland to have the temporary veneer removed and the final veneer bonded in place.
How long will I enjoy my porcelain veneers?
With proper care and attention, including routine dental visits at NW Heights Dental of Portland, most patients will enjoy their restorations for ten years or longer. Evaluations are necessary every six months to ensure the veneer is not covering a tooth impacted by periodontal disease or tooth decay. If this is found, treatment is needed as soon as possible to maintain oral health.
