How to care for the smile after tooth extraction

Tooth ExtractionHaving one or more teeth extracted at the dentist sounds scary, but thanks to the team of NW Heights Dental, patients should no longer be intimidated about the removal of teeth. Whether simple or surgical, Dr. Keri Smith can assist individuals with their needs. Removal of the teeth may be recommended when:

  • Preparing for orthodontic work to relieve overcrowding
  • Wisdom teeth become impacted or negatively affect the rest of the smile
  • Cavity, trauma, or other damage make a tooth no longer strong enough to remain
  • Preparing for the placement of full cosmetic dentures

Dr. Keri Smith of NW Heights Dental encourage patients to ask about tooth extraction and their unique needs. Additionally, patients should be well aware of how to care for their smile following tooth extractions. Below are just a few of the post-operative recommendations made by our team when healing begins:

  • Alternate with ice packs throughout the day for several hours to reduce swelling that can occur after oral surgery
  • Jaw soreness and stiffness is normal, so patients should eat soft foods such as soups, yogurt, or gelatin as their mouth heals from the procedure
  • Rinse routinely with warm salt water to cleanse the area, since brushing in the area should be avoided for a few days
  • Use pain medication if recommended to stay ahead of discomfort that can occur for a few days after the procedure
  • Eat foods on the opposite side of the mouth as the extraction, if possible
  • Avoid drinking from a straw or smoking cigarettes, which can contribute to dry socket
  • Use gauze and pressure immediately following treatment to reduce bleeding and help with clotting
  • Lay low for a few days, and avoid vigorous activities or exercise
