General & Family Dentistry
What is General and Family Dentistry?
General dentistry is the maintenance, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of a wide range of dental conditions. Dr. Hiebert and Dr. Smith offer a wide range of general dentistry services including preventative care, periodontal treatment, tooth-colored fillings, dental crowns, dental bridges, dental implants, teeth whitening, orthodontics, and endodontics. Family dentistry is a term used when offering general dental services at all stages of a patient’s life. At NW Heights, we treat patients of all ages in order to promote good oral hygiene and preserve smiles.
Preventative dentistry is the act of caring for the health of your teeth. A patient’s first line of defense against many dental issues is simply maintaining good dental hygiene. Patients that maintain their oral health can avoid several dental issues, including cavities, gum disease, and enamel wear. Preventative dentistry includes daily brushing, flossing, and regular dental cleanings.
Periodontal treatment is aimed at keeping the supporting structures of the teeth, such as gums and bone, healthy. This involves the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal, or gum disease. After diagnosis, our staff can perform various procedures including scaling and root planing or surgery to prevent the spread of gum disease and tooth loss.
Tooth-colored fillings are a mixture of resin, glass or quartz and porcelain ceramics used to restore parts of missing teeth structure. Additionally, tooth-colored fillings can replace old and worn dental amalgam, gold or other metal fillings. If patients need a filling we can place it in just one dental visit. These fillings are practically invisible since Drs. Hiebert and Smith color match them to the patient’s teeth.
Dental crowns are a restoration appliance that covers a tooth, and as a result, restore it to its normal size and shape. Additionally, crowns can strengthen and improve the appearance of the restored teeth. Patients commonly receive crowns when they have a broken tooth that a filling will not be effective in treating.
Dental bridges are replacements for missing teeth that help maintain facial structure and reduce stress on the jaw. Using a short row of prosthetics, dental bridges replace missing teeth by relying on the strength of surrounding natural teeth, called abutment teeth, to help stabilize the bite. Additionally, bridges also keep adjacent teeth from shifting into open space left by the missing tooth.
Dental implants are artificial tooth roots made of titanium that are placed in the jaw to support restorations such as crowns, bridges, and dentures. Implants provide a permanent alternative to dentures, therefore, patients do not have to leave missing teeth untreated. Dental implants look, feel, and fit just like natural teeth.
Teeth whitening products allow patients to brighten their darkened or stained teeth. Patients with stained teeth as a result of food, tobacco use, age or injury are candidates for teeth whitening. At NW Heights Dental, we offer a variety of in-office and take-home whitening products to help patients to reduce their stains.
Orthodontics is a dental branch that corrects abnormalities of the teeth and jaw through the use of braces or Invisalign. Orthodontic treatments can straighten crooked or protruding teeth, correct irregular spacing between teeth and bite problems, and align lips and teeth properly. Braces and Invisalign can help patients both aesthetically and functionally such as difficulty with biting, chewing, and speech. Left untreated, misalignment of the teeth can cause additional oral problems.
Endodontic treatment is needed when the dental pulp, the soft tissue within the tooth that contains blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue, becomes infected or inflamed. The infection can result from decay, repeated dental procedures, or a crack or injury in the tooth with no visible signs of damage. Patients can suffer from abscesses, sensitivity, tenderness, and discoloration if they do not seek treatment.
